Google Search and AI Overviews: A Guide for UK SMEs

How does Google Search work in 2026, and why does it matter for AI?

Google is a fully automated search engine. Programmes called crawlers explore the web continuously, discovering pages and adding them to Google's index. In the vast majority of cases, publishing a publicly accessible website is enough to start the process.

What matters is whether your pages, once found, are understood correctly and ranked well. That is where SEO begins. And it is also where AI search begins, because both AI Overviews and AI Mode draw exclusively on content from Google's existing search index. If your site does not rank well for standard search, it will not appear in AI-generated responses either.

Google's AI features use a technique called retrieval-augmented generation (RAG): before generating a response, the AI retrieves and reviews actual web pages from the index. It also performs what Google calls query fan-out, generating multiple related sub-queries to build a more complete answer. A user asking about mobile app development costs, for example, might trigger sub-queries on development timelines, platform choices, post-launch maintenance, and build-versus-buy decisions. Businesses that have published thoughtful content across these related questions are far better placed than those with a single generic services page.

This matters for every sector we work in. A logistics startup asking 'how do I build a tracking app?' will trigger sub-queries on GPS integration, driver-facing UX, fleet management APIs, and compliance. A HealthcareTech founder asking 'how do I digitise patient referrals?' will trigger sub-queries on data security, NHS integration, GDPR obligations, and user adoption. Publishing content that genuinely addresses these adjacent questions is how you appear across the full range of what your audience is searching for.

What technical SEO factors influence Google Search and AI visibility?

No amount of great content will perform if the underlying technical structure is preventing your pages from being discovered, crawled, or understood. Google is explicit: to be eligible for generative AI features, a page must be indexed and eligible to appear in standard search results. The technical requirements are identical.

This is one of the most common issues we encounter when auditing sites for new clients. A business may have been publishing solid content for years, but if the site was built quickly as a launch placeholder and never properly reviewed, technical problems are almost certainly suppressing its visibility. We have seen businesses with excellent reputations and real expertise that were effectively invisible to Google because their site was blocking key resources, loading slowly on mobile, or serving duplicate content across multiple URLs.

Crawlability and indexability

Make sure Googlebot can access your pages without obstruction. If you are blocking important CSS or JavaScript files, Google may not be able to render your pages correctly, which affects both ranking and AI visibility. Use Google's URL Inspection Tool in Search Console to see exactly how Google is rendering any given page on your site.

Page speed and mobile performance

Google's ranking systems use page experience as a signal. Slow pages, poor mobile rendering, and intrusive interstitials (pop-ups or overlays that obscure your content before a user has read it) all work against you. This is not just a ranking concern: a user who clicks through from a search result to a slow or broken page is not a user who converts.

When we build web and mobile products at CAD, clean performance is a baseline. Fast load times, semantic HTML, and mobile-first design are not optional extras; they are what a properly built digital product looks like. For clients in Fintech or HealthcareTech, where trust and professionalism are commercial signals, a slow or visually broken site is particularly damaging.

URL structure and site organisation

Descriptive URLs help both users and search engines understand what a page is about before they visit it. Compare cardiffappdevelopers.com/work/jp-logistics with cardiffappdevelopers.com/p?id=2847. The first communicates meaning immediately; the second tells nobody anything.

Grouping related content under logical directories also helps Google learn how frequently different sections of your site change. A policies page changes rarely; a promotions or news section changes often. Google can crawl each at an appropriate frequency once it understands the structure.

Duplicate content

If the same content is accessible at multiple URLs, search engines have to pick one version to show, and they may make that choice differently from the one you would prefer. It is worth ensuring each piece of content lives at one canonical URL. If you cannot consolidate, use a rel="canonical" tag to signal the preferred version. This is not a penalty issue, but it does waste crawl budget and can dilute relevance signals.

JavaScript-heavy sites

If your website relies heavily on JavaScript frameworks to render content, pay careful attention to JavaScript SEO best practices. Google can process JavaScript, but it is more complex and slower than processing standard HTML. Content that depends on JavaScript to render may be indexed later than static content, or in some configurations, not at all.

What kind of content performs best in Google search and AI features?

Both the SEO Starter Guide and Google's AI optimisation guide say the same thing about content, just from slightly different angles. The SEO guide describes it as content that is compelling and useful. The AI guide calls it non-commodity content. The distinction is the same: content that reflects genuine knowledge and experience will always outperform content that recycles what is already available everywhere else.

For founders and SME owners who feel they are competing against larger, better-resourced businesses, this is actually encouraging news. A logistics startup that has solved a specific last-mile delivery problem has source material that a generalist content agency cannot replicate. A HealthcareTech team that has navigated NHS integration has knowledge that generic AI tools cannot synthesise. Your real experience is your competitive advantage in search.

What makes content genuinely useful

• It is easy to read and well organised. Write naturally. Break up long passages into paragraphs and sections. Use clear headings so readers can navigate. This serves human readers first, and search engines follow.

• It is unique. Do not summarise what others have already written. Create content based on what you actually know. First-hand accounts, original case studies, and perspectives grounded in direct experience cannot be replicated by a language model generating generic output at scale.

• It is kept up to date. Check previously published content periodically. Update what has changed. Remove or redirect pages that are no longer relevant.

• It is helpful, reliable, and people-first. Write for the person asking the question, not for an algorithm. Expert and experience-backed content builds the kind of trust that earns return visits, referrals, and links.

• It includes quality images and video where relevant. Many people search visually. High-quality images with descriptive alt text give Google more to work with and increase the surface area through which your site can be found. Use images near the text they relate to, and always write alt text that accurately describes what the image shows.

Our case study content draws on real delivered projects.

For JP Logistics, we built a logistics management platform that reduced manual processing time for their operations team. For Find My Poultry, we delivered a marketplace app connecting poultry buyers and sellers across the UK. Sit By Me, VRFD, and our other case studies represent genuine knowledge that could not be produced by someone who had not done the work. It is exactly the kind of content Google's AI systems are designed to surface.

Anticipating what your readers are actually searching for

Different readers describe the same need using different words. A CTO might search for 'cross-platform app development framework for healthcare'; a founder might search for 'how to build an app for my business with no tech background'. Both are looking for broadly similar things. Writing naturally, covering a topic thoroughly, and thinking about the different angles your readers might approach from all help Google connect your pages to a wider range of relevant queries.

Google's guidance is explicit that you do not need to chase every possible keyword variation. Its language matching systems are sophisticated enough to understand relevance even when exact phrases do not appear on the page. The goal is thorough, human-first coverage of a topic, not mechanical keyword density.

What commodity content looks like, and why to avoid it

Google defines commodity content as material based on common knowledge that could originate from anyone and adds little unique insight. The classic example is something like '10 Tips for Better App Design' that simply restates widely available advice without any grounding in real experience. This type of content may get indexed, but it will not rank well, and it will not appear in AI-generated responses.

The test is simple: would this page exist if you removed everything that reflects your team's specific knowledge and experience? If the answer is yes, it is commodity content.

How do links influence SEO and AI visibility?

The vast majority of new pages Google finds are discovered through links from pages it has already crawled. Links remain one of the most important signals in search, both for crawlability and for ranking.

Internal linking

Linking between your own pages helps Google understand the structure and relative importance of your content. It also helps users navigate, and keeps them engaged with your site for longer. Use descriptive anchor text rather than generic phrases: 'our mobile app development process' tells both the user and Google what the linked page is about; 'click here' tells neither.

External links and backlinks

Links from other trusted websites to your content remain one of the strongest signals Google uses to evaluate quality and authority. The most sustainable way to earn them is by publishing content that is genuinely worth referencing: original research, detailed guides, useful tools, or case studies that other sites want to cite.

When you link out to other sites, only link to resources you trust. If you are linking to something you cannot fully vouch for, use a nofollow annotation to prevent Google associating your site with the destination.

Promotion and content discovery

Publishing good content is not enough if nobody knows it exists. Sustainable promotion includes sharing content across relevant communities and social channels, engaging with your audience, and making sure your web presence appears consistently across your offline materials, business cards, email signatures, and correspondence.

Word of mouth remains the most durable form of promotion. A client who tells a peer about a useful article or case study is a more reliable signal than almost any paid channel. That kind of endorsement starts with content worth sharing.

How can you improve the way your website appears in Google search results?

The two most visible elements of a Google search result are the title link and the snippet. Both are within your control, and both affect whether users click through to your site.

Title links

Google generates title links from several sources, primarily the page's title element, but also from headings and other prominent text on the page. A good title is unique to the page, clear about what the page contains, and includes the name of your business where appropriate. If you are using a content management system, most will handle the title element automatically; your job is simply to write good titles.

Meta descriptions and snippets

The snippet below a title link is drawn from the actual content of the page. You can also influence it with a meta description: a short, one or two sentence summary that captures the most relevant points of the page. A strong meta description is not a guarantee that Google will use it, but it is the single clearest signal you can give about what the page is about and why someone should click.

Images in search results

Images can appear in standard search results, Google Images, and within AI-generated responses. Every image on your site should have descriptive alt text that explains what the image shows and how it relates to the surrounding content. Place images near the text they are most relevant to. Use sharp, high-quality visuals.

How is AI search different from traditional SEO?

Google's AI guide is reassuring in one key respect: the businesses most likely to succeed in AI-powered search are the same ones that have always succeeded in standard search. There is no new set of rules to learn alongside everything else.

That said, there are a few shifts in emphasis that are worth understanding.

Depth and breadth of coverage matter more

Because AI systems generate answers by drawing on multiple sources, and because query fan-out means a single user question may trigger many sub-queries, businesses that have published comprehensive, in-depth content on related topics are better positioned than those with shallow coverage. A single services page is not enough. Case studies, process explanations, FAQ content, and insight articles all contribute.

Unique perspective becomes a stronger differentiator

When AI systems synthesise answers from across the web, generic content gets absorbed and neutralised. What stands out is specificity, original data, first-hand experience, and clear expertise. The CAD team's direct experience building apps for logistics, agriculture, health, and education is precisely the kind of source material that differentiates us from agencies relying on repurposed industry commentary.

Agentic search is emerging

Google's guide introduces what it calls agentic experiences: AI systems that can act on a user's behalf, navigating websites, comparing options, completing bookings. These capabilities are early but developing. For businesses, the implication is that website structure, accessibility, and performance will become progressively more important. Sites that are well-built, clearly structured, and fast to respond will be better positioned for whatever AI search capabilities emerge over the next few years.

This is an area where CAD's background in AI solutions is directly relevant. We understand how AI systems are built, which means we can help clients build digital products designed to work with them, not just alongside them.

What SEO advice can you safely ignore?

Both Google guides include myth-busting sections worth taking seriously. A significant amount of the SEO and AI-SEO advice circulating online is either outdated, ineffective, or actively counterproductive.

From the SEO Starter Guide

• Meta keywords. Google does not use the keywords meta tag. It has not done so for a long time.

• Keyword stuffing. Repeating the same terms excessively is both a poor user experience and a spam policy violation.

• Keywords in domain names. The presence of keywords in a domain name has negligible ranking impact beyond appearing in breadcrumbs.

• Ideal content length. There is no magic word count. Write as much as the topic requires, naturally.

• E-E-A-T as a direct ranking factor. Expertise, Experience, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness describe the qualities of good content, but they are not a ranking signal Google directly measures. Producing content that genuinely reflects these qualities is the goal; optimising for the label is not.

From the AI Optimisation Guide

• LLMS.txt files. Creating special files or markup specifically for AI systems is unnecessary. Google does not treat them differently.

• Content chunking. Breaking pages into fragments for AI consumption is not required. Google's systems can identify the relevant section of a longer page.

• Rewriting in an AI-friendly style. AI systems understand synonyms and intent. You do not need to optimise for every possible phrasing variation.

• Inauthentic mentions. Paid blog placements or forum posts designed to generate mentions are both ineffective against Google's spam filters and a distraction from the work that actually helps.

• Over-relying on structured data. Schema markup supports rich results but is not required for AI visibility, and there is no special schema that unlocks AI features.

The CAD Search Readiness Checklist

Use these questions to assess where your site stands today. If several answers are uncertain or no, address those areas before increasing content volume.

• Indexability: Can Google crawl and index your pages without obstruction? Check in Google Search Console.

• Mobile performance: Do your pages load quickly on mobile devices?

• URL structure: Are your URLs descriptive and your site structure logical?

• Content authenticity: Does your content reflect your team's genuine expertise and experience, or could it have been written by anyone?

• Original insight: Do you publish case studies, quantified outcomes, or detailed guides that go beyond common knowledge?

• Visual optimisation: Are your images high quality, correctly placed, and accompanied by descriptive alt text?

• Internal linking: Do you have a clear internal linking structure that connects related content?

• Monitoring: Are you tracking performance through Google Search Console?

• Schema markup: Does the page your article lives on carry FAQPage, Article, and BreadcrumbList schema? (A web development task, but essential for full AI eligibility.)

Frequently Asked Questions

Does AI search replace SEO?

No. Google's AI features rely on the same search index and ranking systems as traditional search results. Strong SEO remains the foundation for all search visibility, including AI-generated responses.

Can small businesses appear in AI Overviews?

Yes. SMEs that publish helpful, experience-based content can appear in AI-generated search experiences. Size of business is not a ranking factor. Quality and relevance of content are.

Is SEO still worth investing in?
Yes. Strong SEO foundations improve visibility in both traditional search results and AI-powered experiences simultaneously. It is not a choice between one or the other.

Do I need a separate AI SEO strategy?
No. Google's guidance is clear that businesses should focus on high-quality SEO fundamentals rather than creating separate strategies for AI search. The same work delivers both outcomes.

What is Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO)?
Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) is the practice of creating content that is more likely to be retrieved and cited by generative AI systems such as Google's AI Overviews, Gemini, ChatGPT, and Perplexity. It builds on standard SEO with additional emphasis on unique expertise, citable data, and authoritative sourcing.

What is Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO)?
Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) is the practice of structuring content so that search engines and AI assistants can extract and present direct answers from it. This includes appearing in Featured Snippets, People Also Ask boxes, voice search results, and AI Overviews. It prioritises clear question-and-answer structure, concise definitions, and well-organised summaries.

Does having a meta keywords tag help SEO?
No. Google has not used the meta keywords tag as a ranking signal for many years. Time spent on meta keywords is time better spent on meta descriptions, title elements, and content quality.

Do I need an LLMS.txt file for AI search visibility?
No. Google's guidance is explicit that creating special files or markup specifically for AI systems is unnecessary. Google does not treat LLMS.txt files differently from any other content.

How long does SEO take to improve AI visibility?
Technical fixes such as crawl errors or page speed issues can have an impact within weeks. Building authority through helpful, experience-based content typically takes several months of consistent effort. Both are long-term investments, not quick wins.

How do I get my site found without an in-house SEO team?
Focus on the fundamentals: a technically sound site, content that reflects your genuine expertise, and consistent internal linking. Many of the most effective SEO improvements are one-time technical fixes rather than ongoing activities. A development partner who builds sites with search performance in mind from the outset will save you significant remedial cost later.

Can a startup with a new site compete with established brands in AI search?
Yes, particularly on specific, niche topics where established brands publish only generic content. AI systems favour the most relevant and specific answer, not the most authoritative domain overall. A startup that has documented its specific approach to a problem in detail can outrank a large brand that has published only a surface-level overview.

How long does it take to see results from SEO as a startup?
For technical fixes, impact can appear within a few weeks. For new content, allow at least three to six months before drawing firm conclusions. The most important thing is to start with the right foundations rather than chasing quick wins that do not compound over time.
