Sustainable Technology: Is Your Software Helping the Planet or Costing It More?

The cloud is not automatically green.

Moving an application to the cloud can make it easier to scale, maintain and deploy. But choosing a hosting provider based purely on performance or price leaves out another important consideration: the environmental impact of the infrastructure.

Where is the application running? What energy sources power the data centre? How efficiently is that infrastructure operated? What information does the provider publish about its environmental performance?

These questions matter because two technically suitable hosting options may have very different environmental characteristics.

At CAD, we see an opportunity to make infrastructure decisions more informed by sustainability. That means investigating the evidence behind hosting providers' environmental claims and understanding what we can reasonably say about the impact of our own infrastructure choices.

We do not want to label something sustainable simply because it sounds good. We want to understand the reasoning behind the decision and be able to explain it.

Sometimes, the biggest carbon saving comes from what the software prevents.

There is another side to this conversation that we find particularly interesting.

We often measure the resources required to run a piece of software. But what about the resources it helps us avoid using elsewhere?

Consider a care organisation where a member of staff has to return to a property because a task was not completed correctly. That return journey takes time, uses fuel and produces vehicle emissions.

If a digital or AI-enabled process helps staff complete tasks correctly the first time, it may reduce the need for those additional journeys.

The software still has an environmental footprint of its own. But the potential benefit extends beyond the application: it may also prevent emissions that would otherwise have occurred.

The same principle applies to route optimisation. If software helps a logistics business travel fewer miles to complete the same work, we can investigate the difference between the original routes and the optimised routes, then estimate the associated fuel and carbon savings.

The important word here is estimate. To make a credible claim, we need actual journey data, an appropriate baseline and suitable emissions factors.

That is much more meaningful than simply saying that a product is environmentally friendly.

We should look at our own working practices, too.

Sustainability is not only about the products we build for clients. It is also about how we operate as a technology company.

Take project planning. A process that once required hours of manual work may become quicker with better dashboards, automation and digital tools. The immediate benefit is obvious: less time spent on repetitive work and more time available for other tasks.

But can that efficiency also reduce our environmental impact?

Potentially. The answer depends on what actually changes. Does the improvement reduce computer usage, office energy consumption or the need for additional resources? Or does it simply allow the same work to be completed in less time while the underlying energy consumption stays largely unchanged?

We need to distinguish between time saved and carbon saved. They are related questions, but they are not the same thing.

Hybrid working raises a similar challenge. Having fewer people commuting to the office can reduce travel-related emissions, while lower office occupancy may create opportunities to reduce energy consumption or the space required.

However, working from home also uses energy, and the overall result depends on factors such as commuting distances, transport methods, heating, cooling and office utilisation.

Rather than assuming the answer, we want to investigate the evidence.

How do you turn a sustainability claim into something measurable?

It is relatively easy to say that an AI tool saves time, that a hosting provider uses renewable energy, or that a new process reduces unnecessary journeys. It is much harder to establish exactly what those changes mean for carbon emissions.

To do that properly, we need a consistent approach.

First, we need a baseline. What happened before the technology or process changed?

Next, we need to understand what happens afterwards. How many journeys are avoided? How much distance is saved? How has AI usage changed? What difference has been made to energy consumption?

Then we need to apply appropriate emissions factors, document our assumptions and explain the limitations.

The quality of the result depends on the quality of the underlying data. Where we cannot measure something directly, we should say so. Where a calculation relies on assumptions, those assumptions should be visible.

We would rather provide a transparent estimate with clear limitations than a precise-looking number that cannot be justified.

Why this matters beyond CAD.

For many organisations, sustainability is becoming an important part of business planning, reporting and decision-making. Environmental, social and governance (ESG) considerations can influence how organisations assess their operations, suppliers and long-term objectives.

Technology companies have a role to play here, not just by making their own operations more efficient, but by helping clients understand the environmental implications of their technology choices.

That could mean identifying opportunities to optimise AI usage, reviewing infrastructure, reducing unnecessary travel or measuring the impact of a more efficient business process.

It also means recognising that environmental claims need evidence. A sustainability story becomes much more useful when an organisation can explain what changed, how the impact was calculated and where uncertainty remains.

For CAD, this is an opportunity to bring our software development experience together with a more rigorous approach to environmental measurement.

The question we should be asking.

Technology will continue to evolve. AI will become more capable, software will become more integrated into everyday business operations, and the infrastructure supporting it will continue to grow.

The question is not whether we should stop using technology. It is whether we can make better decisions about how we build it, where we run it and what we use it to achieve.

At CAD, we believe sustainable technology requires us to look at both sides of the equation: the environmental cost of running our solutions and the emissions those solutions may help prevent.

We still have research to do, data to collect and methodologies to validate. But that is precisely why the conversation matters.

Because saying that technology can make a business more efficient is one thing.

Understanding whether that efficiency makes a measurable difference to the planet is where the real work begins.
