How to Get Your App Funded: An Insider's Guide to App Investors, from CAD

Why is app funding harder to win than founders expect?

Apps are a proven business, and growth in the sector has been huge in recent years, which most investors already know well. The practical effect of that is your idea has probably already been built, in a similar form if not an identical one. Founders sometimes take that as bad news. We'd push back on that.

CAD Insight: We've never seen an existing competitor kill a good pitch on its own. What kills a pitch is a founder who can't explain, clearly and quickly, why their version is worth backing over what's already out there. That's a preparation problem, not an idea problem.

A crowded market is a reason to be sharper about your point of difference, not a reason to walk away from the idea. Investors expect competition to exist. What they're listening for is whether you understand it and can position against it convincingly.

How do you find your app's edge over the competition?

Start by being honest about what already exists, then get specific about what your version does differently, whether that's the audience you're serving, the problem you're solving more directly, or the experience you're building around it. Vague differentiation, such as claiming to be simpler or better without saying how, tends to read as a founder who hasn't done the legwork. Specific differentiation, backed by a reason it matters to users, reads as a founder who has.

This is also where market research earns its keep. Speaking to potential users, and where possible to people close to similar products, gives you language and evidence for your point of difference that's far more convincing than assumption alone.

How do you write an elevator pitch that survives a real meeting?

Elevator pitch: a short, confident pitch that explains what your app is and what it does for users in about thirty seconds.

Not every investor will sit through a full presentation and set of research, so your pitch needs to work in whatever time you're actually given, which is often far less than you'd like. Keep it short and sharp, and expect it to take practice and several rounds of fine-tuning before it feels right. Focus on your biggest value, your strongest selling point, and the problem your app solves for real users.

CAD Insight: The elevator pitches that land best in our experience aren't the ones with the most detail. They're the ones a founder can say without sounding like they're reciting it. If you stumble reciting your own pitch, an investor will notice before you finish the sentence.

Treat the elevator pitch as the opening line of a longer conversation, not the whole pitch compressed. Its job is to earn you the right to go into more depth, not to cover everything at once.

Why we recommend building a prototype before you pitch

Prototype: a low-fidelity, working representation of your app, built to show investors how it will look and work before the full product exists.

Once you've got your pitch and your point of difference sorted, the next practical step is contacting an app developer and getting a prototype built to show off the concept. This is the piece of advice we give most consistently, because it changes the entire dynamic of an investor meeting. A prototype gives investors something real to react to, rather than a description they have to take on trust.

CAD Insight: We've sat in on enough investor conversations to notice the shift the moment a founder opens a prototype instead of a slide. The questions change from "could this work" to "how does this work", which is a much better conversation for a founder to be having.

It shows exactly how the app will work and roughly how it will look, which does far more to prove you're ready to execute than a pitch deck on its own. It also gives you something to iterate on with early feedback before you've committed to a full build.

What does a prototype cost, and how long does it take?

Building a prototype doesn't take long. At CAD, depending on the idea, a prototype can typically be ready within a few weeks, and it can be put together for an affordable price relative to a full build. The exact cost and timeline depend on how complex the idea is and how many screens or flows need to be shown, so we always scope this properly with a founder rather than quoting a blanket figure before we understand what they're building

CAD Insight: Our advice to founders who are worried about the cost of a prototype is to compare it against the cost of pitching without one. A few weeks and a modest budget spent here tends to save far more time and money than it costs, because it either strengthens the pitch or surfaces a problem with the idea while it's still cheap to fix.

Common mistakes we see founders make when chasing funding

• Leading with the idea instead of the evidence that they can execute it

• Treating an existing competitor as a reason to give up rather than a reason to sharpen their pitch

• Turning up with a pitch deck but nothing an investor can actually see or use

• Over-rehearsing the full pitch but never practising the thirty-second version

• Waiting for the idea to feel finished before showing it to anyone, investor or otherwise

Most of these come from the same root cause: preparing to describe the app rather than preparing to show it. That's the gap a prototype closes.

What happens after investors see your prototype?

A prototype tends to shift the conversation from whether the idea is credible to what it would take to build the full product. That's a good position to be in, but it also means you should be ready for more detailed questions on cost, timeline and scope than a deck alone usually invites. This is where having already thought through your feature priorities, essentials versus nice-to-haves, and a rough route to a minimum viable product puts you in a stronger position to answer confidently.

CAD Insight: The founders who move fastest after a good prototype meeting are the ones who already know what they'd build first with the money. Don't wait for a yes to start thinking about that.

Our advice on sequencing the whole process

If we were advising a founder from a standing start, the order we'd suggest is: sharpen your point of difference, build and rehearse a short elevator pitch, get a prototype built, then approach investors with both the pitch and the prototype ready to go. Doing it in that order means every investor conversation happens with something real behind it, rather than hoping the idea alone will carry the meeting.

If startup history has taught us anything, it's that apps with great execution matter more than apps with great ideas alone. Following this sequence won't guarantee funding, but it puts you in a far stronger position to show investors you're a go-getter with a genuine plan, not just an idea.

FAQs

Do I need a working app before I approach investors?

No. Most investors expect a prototype at this stage rather than a finished app. A prototype is usually enough to show how the idea works in practice, and is far more achievable on a founder's early budget and timeline.

How long should my elevator pitch be?

Aim for around thirty seconds. It should cover what your app is, who it's for, and the problem it solves, with room to go into more detail if the investor wants it.

How long does it take to build a prototype?

It depends on the idea, but CAD can typically turn a prototype around within a few weeks. More complex ideas with several user flows will take longer than a single-purpose app.

What if an app similar to mine already exists?

That's common, and it isn't a reason to abandon the idea. Use it to sharpen your point of difference and be ready to explain clearly what your version does better and for whom.

Should I build a prototype myself, or bring in a developer?

Either can work at a very early stage, but a developer-built prototype tends to hold up better under investor questions, since it's built to actually reflect how the finished app would function rather than just how it looks.

What should I be ready to build first if I get funded?

Having a rough answer to this before you pitch, ideally shaped around a minimum viable product rather than the full feature list, shows investors you're already thinking like someone who can execute, not just someone who can pitch.
