Discover how iPhone Duo changes app design, from fold-aware layouts and multitasking to posture testing, with insights from Cardiff App Developers
Written by Alfie Willmott
Apple announced iPhone Duo on 9 September 2026, its first foldable iPhone, and it reaches stores on 23 October. For the teams who design and build apps, this is the biggest change to the iPhone canvas since 2007.
At Cardiff App Developers we have spent the weeks since the keynote working out what this means for the apps we design. Here is where we have landed.
Foldable phones have been on sale for around seven years. Royole's FlexPai went first in late 2018, and Samsung's Galaxy Fold followed in 2019 after a delayed and bumpy launch.
Google's Pixel Fold came later, in 2023. Samsung has refined its Fold line every year since and has dominated the category.
Apple said openly at launch that it took its time while rivals moved first. That patience shows in the details.
The headline difference is that both displays share the same aspect ratio. On iPhone Duo, content scales in proportion. A screen you were reading closed looks like the same
screen, only bigger, when you open it. Apple has also reshaped iOS 27 around the device. Navigation, the Dock and Lock Screen controls sit along the side to free up vertical space. The Dynamic Island now runs vertically down the edge. A single display engine drives both screens at once, which keeps the handover between them smooth. The hardware supports the software. The hinge is built from more than 100 parts and holds the inner display flat, and a nano-texture finish reduces how visible the crease is. Third-party apps such as Netflix, Zoom and Slack shipped Duo-ready layouts on day one, so users will expect every app to follow.

Apple's first foldable iPhone gives apps more screen sizes, more ways to multitask and more chances for old layout assumptions to show. If your business already has an iOS app, this checklist helps you decide what needs fixing, what could be improved and what can wait.
On iPhone Duo, content reacts as the phone folds. It reorients when turned sideways and jumps to the right display when flipped over. That motion tells the user where they are. When a list on the outer screen widens into a list and detail view as the phone opens, the user sees that nothing was lost and knows where to look next. We treat the fold as a navigation event in its own right, with a start state, an end state and a transition we design and test as carefully as any tap.
In practice that means a few rules:
Keep the user's place: scroll position, form inputs and media playback carry across the fold.
Anchor one element through the transition, usually whatever the user last touched, so the eye has something to follow.
Match the speed of the hinge. Motion that lags behind the hand, or races ahead of it, feels broken even when it works.
For the first time on an iPhone, Split View lets people run two apps side by side. They can also open two windows of the same app, keep a Siri conversation going beside whatever they are reading, and save app pairs to return to later.
Once people get used to that, a single-pane app starts to feel cramped. A user comparing two hotels in Safari, or replying to Slack while a Zoom call runs, will notice quickly which apps play well in half a screen, and which fall apart.
We now design every key screen in two widths: full inner display and half of it. The half-width view gets the most attention, because that is where an app shares space with something else and has to earn its place. We also look for natural pairs. A booking app might sit well beside a calendar, and a fitness app beside a music player, so we make sure those handoffs feel smooth.
iPhone Duo can stand on its own, and that changes how people use it. Set it down and it enters Stand By on either display, even when it isn't charging, acting as a clock, photo frame or widget hub.
We think about two postures:
Seated.
The phone is propped on a desk, a café table or a train tray. The user is a little further away and often hands-free. Text needs to be larger, tap targets bigger, and the most useful information should be readable at a glance. Video calls, recipes, dashboards and live scores all suit this mode.
Standing.
The phone is in one hand, usually closed, while the user is on the move. Here the5.4-inch outer screen does the work. Tasks need to finish in a few taps with a thumb, and anything that needs more room should invite the user to open up rather than force it.
We have added a fold-first stage to our design process, and it runs alongside everything else we do for iOS. It has five steps.
Posture mapping. Before any wireframes, we list the app's core tasks and decide where each one belongs: closed and in hand, open in the hand, or propped up. This sets the priority for every screen that follows.
Fold-aware layouts. We design each key screen at three sizes: outer display, full inner display and half of the inner display for Split View. Navigation moves to the side, in line with iOS 27, and nothing important sits on the hinge line.
Continuity design. For every screen we define what carries across the fold and what changes. Scroll position, inputs and playback always survive. Extra panels, such as a detail view, appear only when there is room.
Motion prototyping. We prototype the open and close transitions and review them on a real device, at the speed of a real hand. Motion that looks fine in a design tool can feel very different in the hand.
Posture testing. We test with real users seated, standing and with the phone propped up, then hand developers a spec that covers every posture and transition alongside the screens themselves.
iPhone Duo goes on sale on 23 October, and early adopters tend to be heavy app users with high expectations. Apps that feel at home on it will stand out quickly, and the rest will look dated.
