[FREE GUIDE] From hosting fees to bug fixes, OS updates to UI refreshes, find out exactly what goes into maintaining a mobile app, what it should cost, and the five strategies that can cut your spend without cutting corners.
Written by TJ Delima
A widely cited benchmark in the industry puts average app maintenance at roughly 20% of the original development cost per year. So if your app cost £80,000 to build, expect to budget around £16,000 annually to keep it healthy, secure, and competitive.
That figure can swing significantly depending on your app's complexity, your team's location, and how aggressively you want to improve the product over time.
Bug Fixes and Technical Issues
No app ships perfectly. Bugs surface in the wild in ways that testing rarely predicts, and how quickly you address them has a direct impact on user retention. Simple fixes can be resolved in hours; more deeply embedded issues touching core functionality can take weeks and carry meaningful costs.
Performance Monitoring and Analytics
You can't fix what you can't see. Ongoing monitoring through tools like Firebase or similar platforms gives your team visibility into crash rates, load times, and user behaviour patterns. This data-driven approach allows you to prioritise fixes intelligently rather than reactively and the tooling itself carries a cost that should be factored into your maintenance budget.
User expectations evolve constantly. What felt intuitive at launch can start to feel dated within 18 months. Keeping your interface fresh like being aligned with current design standards and adapted to new screen sizes and OS guidelines, is an ongoing investment that pays dividends in engagement and retention.
Hosting and Infrastructure
Your app lives somewhere, and that somewhere costs money. Hosting fees typically range from around £55 to £185 per month depending on your traffic volume, data storage needs, and growth trajectory. As your user base scales, so does this expense.
Where your maintenance team is based significantly affects your costs. Development rates vary considerably across regions, teams based in Eastern Europe, South Asia, or Latin America often offer competitive rates compared to UK or US equivalents, with varying trade-offs in time zones and communication overhead.

Apple's first foldable iPhone gives apps more screen sizes, more ways to multitask and more chances for old layout assumptions to show. If your business already has an iOS app, this checklist helps you decide what needs fixing, what could be improved and what can wait.
Most founders budget for the build and forget about everything that comes after. Maintenance isn't optional, it's what protects every pound you've already spent.
Understanding what kind of maintenance you need helps you plan and budget more effectively.
Corrective Maintenance addresses bugs, logic errors, and design flaws that have already made it into the live app. Think of it as damage control, necessary, but ideally minimised through good development practices upfront.
Adaptive Maintenance keeps your app compatible with the changing environment around it: new iOS and Android releases, updated third-party APIs, new device types, and shifting regulatory requirements. This is non-negotiable for any app that plans to stay live.
Perfective Maintenance is about improvement rather than repair. This is where user feedback turns into new features or refined workflows which is the work that keeps your app competitive and keeps your users loyal.
Emergency Maintenance covers unexpected critical failures that need immediate attention. These situations are unpredictable by nature, which is why having a clear support agreement in place before you need it is essential.
Everything you need to know about mobile app maintenance costs, what drives them, how to plan for them, and how to keep them under control.
Start With an MVP
A Minimum Viable Product approach gets a core version of your app in front of real users early. The feedback you gather shapes development priorities, which means you're spending money on things users actually want and not assumptions. This significantly reduces costly rework later.
Work With a Trusted Development Partner
A reliable development partner won't just build your app, they'll help you anticipate future maintenance needs from the outset. Transparent partners will flag likely cost drivers early and help you plan budgets realistically, rather than leaving you with surprises post-launch.
Invest in Automated Testing
Manual testing is time-intensive and expensive at scale. Automated testing frameworks catch regressions and performance issues continuously, without the labour cost of running every check by hand. The upfront investment in good test coverage pays back significantly over the app's lifecycle.
Use Agile Development Practices
Agile methodologies like working in short sprints, reviewing code regularly, and integrating new features incrementally can reduce the risk of technical debt accumulating. Code reviews catch issues before they become expensive problems, and continuous integration means new features don't break existing functionality.
Build on a Scalable Architecture
Apps built on modular, well-structured codebases are significantly cheaper to maintain. When your code is cleanly organised, developers can isolate problems quickly, add features without unintended consequences, and hand off work without lengthy onboarding. Cutting corners on architecture at the build stage typically leads to disproportionately higher maintenance costs down the line.
Mobile app maintenance is not a grudge purchase, it's what protects the investment you've already made. Apps that aren't maintained lose users, attract poor reviews, and eventually become security risks. Apps that are maintained consistently build loyal audiences and compound in value over time.
The businesses that get the most from their apps are the ones that treat maintenance as an ongoing strategic priority, not an afterthought. With the right partner and the right practices in place, those costs are predictable, manageable, and well worth it.
